I am a woman who builds alot of stuff and works in the woods alot. I hate handling a big ol' chainsaw and this bad boy helps to cut down branches and trees up to 5in diameter for me when working on an outdoor project with no electricity available WOW!

This tool is quite powerful and last a long time on a single battery. This was part of the DC6KITA. I have tested each tool and have reviewed some. This one is not exception. On a fresh battery and with the supplied blade I continually cut 2x4's until my hand was sore from holding on. The power is nice. It did not seem too bog when pushed hard through the wood. Battery life suprised me by never giving up. On a full demo job where cutting throught various materials is necessary it might show it's weakness in longevity.
Having purchased a 1/2 rebar to test the DC410 cut-off tool, I proceeded to test the DC385 with a 18tpi metal blade. It worked quite well. The power was still there. No bogging. Of course pressure was needed to help the teeth bite, but that is to be expected.
Also the adjustable shoe is a new feature. It does not have much range of motion but at least it is there.
For most all home projects this is going to be a wonderful tool. In owning many XRP batteries and having several chargers, I don't forsee buying a corded saw. This would be a solid 5 star tool, but there is only one thing that slightly bothers me. The blade is not centered in the shoe becuase of the 4 way blade clamp. Now I gave it the 5 because I would rather have the 4 way clamp than have it centered.

My brother turned me on to these 18Volt Porter Cable power tools. They got a buy recommendation in CR magazine. You can spend a lot more money, but if you're working on projects around the house and don't need "contractor" level tools, then this is clearly the set for you. Actually, it may even be the set to buy if you are a contractor. You could buy two of these for one of other brands.
I've used the drill, of course, and it works fine with adjustments for torque, keyless chuck, etc. It has the light which is helpful when you need it and illuminates your work area. Basic tool that will do all you need it to.
The impact driver (which I purchased separately) is fantastic for putting in screws. I wasn't familiar with the impact driver tool until I tried this. Don't use your drill for this job. The impact driver works very, very well to put screws in. It has the higher torque and will drive the screw with one motion all the way to completely in. This tool is great. Save yourself some time and energy and get this impact driver.
I've got the circular saw and it works fine as well. A basic tool to rip plywood or cut boards, and this one goes a long time on the EX battery. Only thing I had to pick up separately was a saw guide that slides into the saw and tightens with the set screw. This lets you use the edge to keep your line straight on the board you're sawing. Picked up a nice guide that fits any saw at Home Depot for about $10. I've used this saw to cut 4 by 4 posts for outside fence, for plywood, for 2 by 4's, trim, etc. and it's perfect.
The reciprocating, sawzall makes you feel like you've got a real weapon in your hands. This is great for cutting through old work that you need to remove and works quite well. It's a powerful tool that lets you demo easily. It is so easy to change blades you won't believe it.
The jigsaw (also purchased separately from the kit) works very well too. It's a breeze to change blades and the blade locks in place against a support that lets you confidently make very smooth cuts. This is not the jigsaw of the past which was often a pain to use with poor results. No, this Porter Cable jigsaw is very smooth and makes the cuts you need.
I've been using these tools for a month or so to do some demo and remodeling and I highly recommend them. You cannot beat them at the price. Battery life is excellent and recharge time is about 15 mins for LX and 30 mins for EX battery. So with two batteries you can keep on working without a problem. By the time you use one out, your other battery is recharged. And they do go for quite a bit of work on a single charge. I installed some plywood flooring on my porch with lots of screws and my impact driver never did quit. The tools are solid, handle well, and are of very good quality. Porter Cable gets the highest rating.

I had been a big fan of Dewalt products until the last few years and the quality started going downhill. I figured if they all come from overseas, why pay the big bucks when they have to be replaced every year anyway. I am satisfied with the performance of the Porter Cable tools and the little saw is more powerful than I expected and real handy for small jobs around the farm. The lithium batteries last a long time too.

I've had Makita tools for over 20 years and all of them are still working. I am not a Contractor but more towards the occasional renovation. I have a big project coming up and need portable Pro tools. Only recently have the power from higher voltage batteries made this possible. Not the cheapest "Set" but far better built than the competition. This set is a nice combination of tools and though most people don't think they have need for the light, it ends up being used often. Great to have during a power failure - 12 hours of a powerful light with the two batteries. Charger is fast and should be able keep up with heavy tool use. A battery powered circular saw with this much power and stamina - never thought I would ever own one! Love it
OKAY! It is now a year later and I have finished my Log Cabin in Vermont. Actually, I just did the interior but that is still a whole summer of work. All the walls, doors, stairs, plumbing and electrical work. All done with just this set of power tools with just the addition of the LXT jigsaw. I also got 2 more batteries as often you work with more than one tool at a time. The tools made it easy. Batteries last and recharge faster then I used them up. Drill and jigsaw last the longest. The circular saw needs the most power and depletes the battery fastest but the next battery is already waiting. The included blade for the circular saw is high quality and lasted for the entire project - still good for a while yet! I used the reciprocal saw the least but it is fine also. I have small hands but the tools are really well balanced and not too heavy. The batteries deliver maximum power till the end and don't slowly get weaker and weaker. You know when it is time to recharge. Very glad I got these tools. No hesitation in recommending them or any other Makita tool! Just wish I had another cabin to do...

This is the best kit I have ever owned. They tools work great and are tough. The batteries hold up well.

used this saw a couple months.The switch had a loose connection i guess..Melted the switch and will not work .Can't find a switch for this saw anywhere in the Net..Saw is worthless and i have to replace it and you can bet it won't be another Kawasaki saw

Got this baby for Christmas and just in time to use for boarding up the basement windows. Easy to use, and stronger than I expected. I even used it to cut some fire wood since my chain saw finally quit on me. So far it's proven to be very durable and worth the money!
That's a +1 for Kawasaki!

Shop around for price. Product itself is fantastic. I'm a carpenter and use these on a cordless Makita, What a great setup ! Use for lighter duty and stay away from nails and this blade last and performs good for along time. I only buy Irwin blades for all my saws. Price/Performance can't be beat in my opinion.

This blade is a light duty blade i would not cut oak with it. well it is good for beginners. It did a really good job on the pine and poplar. i used it with a 2.6ah, 14.4V battery powered saw so i am not sure how it would perform on a more powerful saw. i just use it to cut stock 3/4" thick or smaller. The blade is stainless steel so it is not going to cut like a carbide tooth blade. definitely good for small light jobs. i have the 24 tooth carbide blade and the plywood blade. i do projects occasionally so it is good for me.

As is to be expected from Makita, the saw blade is of impecable quality, and nicely packaged.

This saw was purchased to replace an underpowered Black ; Decker, which bogged down when ripping hardwood trim for bookcases and cabinets. The power of this saw is excellent, although DeWalt's own rip fence flopped around in the slot so badly that the trim cuts were practically useless. I tried putting tape around the rip fence to steady it in the slot, but it didn't help much. Since the saw has good power, I use it to rip plywood panels to size before precision trimming. For basic construction and framing, this saw would probably be more than adequate, but not for precision trim cuts. As others have reported, the shoe flexes too much (probably because DeWalt tried to keep it as lightweight as possible), and when combined with the shaky rip fence slot, it will probably give rough edges to your trim.

I bought this saw instead of the comparable Hitachi because it was a bit lighter and more powerfull. The product details said it has an electric brake, an essential safety feature in my opinion, but it DOES NOT! I will be returning mine and purchasing another, but not from Amazon.

The purpose of this review is to help contractors make an informed decision about this Makita cordless kit. I spent hours researching before I decided on this one (LXT601) and I hope to make your search easier.
I am a remodeling contractor and I use these tools HARD five days a week. I bought this kit in July of 2008. After getting over the euphoria of brand new cordless tools and using them for several months, I have a list of pros and cons.
One random note. I thought that all lithium-ion tools stop dead when the battery gets too low. This is certainly not the case. All of these tools wind down just as my old NiCad kit did.
The impact driver is by far the best and most useful tool in the kit. The belt clip is wonderful and the LED light at the front of the tool, which I admit that I thought was silly at first, has a surprising number of uses. The fact that it stays on when you release the trigger is great - most other lights will flash on with every slight squeeze. I can drive 3" screws constantly for over an hour on a single battery.
The hammerdrill/driver is on the weak side. When drilling 5/32" holes for tapcons, the tool seemed to buzz and vibrate more than actually hammer. It works great for light and even some medium-duty jobs, but not much beyond that. It works well for driving, but with the impact driver, I don't even use the drill for driving anymore. All in all, the drill is not impressive.
The circular saw cut like a hot knife through butter with the supplied blade. However, as with any thin kerf blade, the cut deteriorated significantly as the blade became more used. The motor and power are fine, and the grip feels very natural. However, I have two major gripes. The first is that the lever that controls the depth-of-cut seems to strip out repeatedly and I have to remove the E-clip and manually return the lever to its intended position. It's quite frustrating at times. The second gripe is that the lever for the blade guard is not big enough and I have to contort my hand into a very awkward position to reach it. I'm not impressed with those two design elements.
The sawzall feels great in my hands, but seems underpowered. It's certainly not up to any significant cutting task. It would be fine for cutting a hole in a roof for a ventilation fan or something of that nature, but it wouldn't be able to cut out all of the studs in a window opening, for example. Also, when the tool vibrates excessively such as when cutting metal bolts, hardware, or the like the blade clamp is not able to hang on to the blade and it keeps flying out. THAT gets old in a hurry.
And the flashlight, although bright, only has four positions. I have had other lights in the past that swivel and are much more useful. I have a much tougher time getting this one into position, such as on a mudsill to shine into the electrical panel in the basement I'm working on.
And here's the verdict... The best tool is the impact driver. There is a 2-piece kit available that contains the impact driver and a much heavier hammerdrill which I've used and found to be a much better tool. I would buy the 2-piece kit if I had it to do over. If you're a contractor, as I am, and you intend to use these tools to make a living, as I do, I would recommend not buying this kit. DeWalt has kits that are heavier because they're NiCad, but the saws work better. As much as I hate to say it, if I were to start from scratch and were to only buy one tool platform, it would be DeWalt. If I could mix and match, I would buy the DeWalt kit for the saws, and the Makita 2-piece for the drill and impact driver.

I bought this set for about 2 weeks.
A new version to replace LXT600 / LXT700 (both were retired). Look at the spec and here's the difference:
1. BHP452 maybe less powerful than BHP451 (just by spec; I don't own BHP451 to compare);
2. BSS611 is 0.2 lb lighter than BSS610; (Dewalt circular saw blade (18 tooth) made finish smoother in this set.)
3. BJR182 is 1.875" shorter than BJR181 and w/o the LED front light;
4. BTD141 has 50 in-lbs Torque more than BTD140 (I don't like the cheap silver plastic at the body, but not enough to make me deduct a star from this set);
5. DC18RA 30 minutes rapid charger vs old DC18SC 45 minutes charger.
Forget the LXT700, you don't want to pay $100 more for a on-site radio. You can have it free through rebate if you bought this set on/before 5/31/08.
I rather Makita offered an extra battery (even it's cheaper), but there is no choice. As another reviewer pointed out MP3 is a better choice.

Best price/quality/size/weight/completion comapre with other brands like Dewalt, Milwaukee, Ridgid (no cordless grinder), Bosch, etc.
Prefect if Maikta replace the flashlight by a Jig Saw. Every brands practice to make money/looks better by placing a flashlight in their combos. What can I said...
I used to own Dewalt DC4PAKA combo kit but found the Ni-cad battery didn't last long so returned it and decided to go Lithium-ion.
IMO Dewalt quality is excellcent but the weight (me not a big guy) and price is too heavy; Milwaukee just too heavy and I don't like its hand-feel. Ridgid has lifetime service guarantee (including battery) but I'm not sure the quality of both tools and service. Tools look and feel good in HD but offer no cordless grinder.
So far every tools included are doing their job as what they suppose to. Again I compare this set with Dewalt Ni-Cad 4 pc combo set, not any other cord/cordless tools.
One LXT600 reviewer said the recipro saw is a pc of junk. I don't know but for me it did what Dewalt recipro saw capable to, only the weight is much lighter.
However, I did extended research before my decision and much appreciate opinions from all reviewers.

I was within one minute of purchasing this saw and when I asked to purchase a plywood blade. None are available from Makita or any other blade manufacturer. The only saw blade that is available is the multipurpose blade that comes with the saw. The arbor size is 5/8 inch, which does NOT match the 3/8 inch of DeWalt saw blades of this diameter (5-3/8 inch). The dealer did not stock any replacement blades. The DeWalt blades do not fit. So buying any replacement saw blades would be a special order, not the story you want to here when you are in the middle of a project and need a saw blade now.
On the plus side, this saw is light weight, well balanced, with very comfortable hand grips. If only replacement saw blades were available readily and in multiple types.
One caution, a saw blade of this diameter, 5-3/8 inch cannot cut through a 2x4 (1.5 inches) in one pass if the saw is set at a 45 degree miter. So this small of a saw blade is strictly a plywood and paneling saw, not for framing lumber cut at 45 degree.
I am not sure why Makita has chosen such a odd arbor size of 5/8 inch vs. every other manufacturer's 3/8 inch arbor for saw blades of this size.
If not for the blade limitations this saw would have been mine and in my workshop.
I opted instead for the 6-1/2 Makita cordless saw, model no. BSS610. 6-1/2 inch diameter saw blades are manufactured by almost every blade and saw manufacturer and are available in every type (framing, plywood, etc....). So I own a slightly larger and heavier saw that I can buy replacement blades for at any hardware store. Another plus, is a 6-1/2 inch diameter saw blade when set at 45 degrees cuts up to 1-9/16 inches, so cutting a 2x4 at 45 degrees in one pass is a winner.
