I did nothing but make fun of a buddy who bought the Milwaukee 12v compact drill/driver after he already had a complete 18v Dewalt set. That all changed when he left it at my house one day. I soon picked up my own 12v set by Makita with the circular saw to compliment my 18V LXT set. The size is perfect for having in your kitchen closet or somewhere close if you're frequently into little projects like I am. It takes up very little room when tucked in the case and leaves room for extra tools too.
drill/driver- I find myself reaching for this more often than a regular screwdriver. The small size lets you be very precise and the light is an absolute bonus. I had no problems screwing 3" screws into 2x4's. It has plenty of torque and great battery life.
circular saw- blade spins with more torque than sheer rpm's than I expected. My major use for this saw was cutting tons of hardwood lath frome a home rehab into shorter pieces for my wood-burner. My other use is drywall. I can cut and notch areas with ease and be more precise than I can with a rotary-type tool. Also worked well with tile backer board. The small size and light weight come in handy. Only thing I'd like is more rpm's but I can't really complain as it does what it's supposed to. Ripping sheeting while on a roof?- of course not. Being a good all-around saw that is easy to handle and replaces a hand saw?- exactly!

Item came on time and. I am very satisfied with the items. Makita is well known and always delivers quaility products.

The product does a great job cutting many things, but can easily choke on two layers of cardboard if it's tilted sideways by a bit. When it doesn't cut, often the blade is a fraction of an inch away from what needs cutting, and it's a feed problem. Keeping it straight helps a lot on thick things, and sometimes, angling the front downwards slightly can get it to bite and go smoothly.
If you are not feeding it something at maximum thickness, and are keeping it straight, it does a fine job.
As for the safety switch, the tool is designed so that if you grab it with one hand, chances are the switch will be a bit forward of where your thumb is likely to end up. You will be a lot less likely to turn it on by mistake while grabbing it, but the trade off is that the button feels a bit forward of where you might expect it. But it's hardly a chore and stretching your thumb forward a fraction of an inch is all it takes.
The safety switch can be pressed from either side, so you can use it with your left or right hand. But if you use your left hand, you can't see the blade area and are more likely to have problems keeping the tool at the correct angle. If you are left handed, it won't be the ideal tool.

Seems overpriced for what it is. Its main design fault is the slow speed of the cutting blade. I bought it for cutting fabric for garment making. Professional versions of similar cutters used in the fashion industry are more powerful and very high speed, allowing cutting around quite sharp curves without nasty jagged edges. So I was disappointed and would not recommend it for any precision work, only as a rough cutter. I would almost go as far as to call it junk at the price of $52. Maybe for $20 it would be OK.

A friend has converted me to a Dewalt believer over the last few years. And I've always loved his 18V cordless drill. When I spotted this set on sale I couldn't pass it up!
The drill is a 3 speed, 3 mode, adjustable clutch, locking keyless chuck MONSTER of a cordless drill. Three selectable speed ranges lets you maximize availble torque to suit material and application. I have mine in the middle range which suits most applications. Three modes: Screw, Drill, Hammer... The screw mode engauges the clutches to avoid stripping your heads. With 23 clutch settings I think you'll find the right one for your fasteners. Drill mode disengauges the clutches and lets you run your bits without changing your clutch setting. The final mode is Hammer Drill mode for masonry drilling. You gotta love that! I've never seen a keyless chuck that works like this. Holding the cylinder and turnin the chuck unlocks it then spinning the cylinder will tighten or loosen the jaws. Once the jaws are tight, turn the chuck again to lock. NICE! I couldn't be happier with this drill!
Also in this set are two 18V XRP DC9096 Ni-Cad batteries and a one hour charger. The packs aren't that much larger than the 15.6V I'm used to with my previous drill but definitely offer much more power. They are heavy but not so much that you care. The one hour quick charger is mode protected to prevent over charging and even has an indicator to tell whether it's charging, complete, or even if their's a problem with the battery. One word about your batteries...keep them charged ALL OF THE TIME. Batteries tend to devlop issues if they'll left in discharged state. Fully charged batteries will have better overall performance and a longer life. I just put mine on the charge every month or so to top them off.
6.5" Circular Saw. I haven't cut anything with it yet but I have an up and coming project involving 1/2" ply, 2x4s, 2x6s, and 4x4 porch spindles. I'll let you know how it did. As for the physics of it. It feels like a beast. A good heavy motor and cast body. It has a nice lever lock for the depth adjustment and nob lock for for the angle.
Reciprocating Saw... Again haven't cut anything with it yet, but soon. It feels good in the hand. With a pack inserted it feels about the same weight as my 7.5amp Craftsman. I have high hopes for this little beauty.
Update: 12-27-2011: I recently had to repair and upgrade a shower. I used this on metal, wood, and PVC. I'm thoroughly impressed. It cuts like a champ, as fast as my corded model, and though I wasn't cutting all day long, the battery held it's charge thru the entire project. This handly tool just moved to the head of the pack. Loading the blade is simple and tooless. But even being tooless, the blade was rock solid! It accepts all standard reciprocating saw blades.
4" Angle Grinder... This and the price difference were the reasons I went with this set over the 4 tool set. I caught this one on sale and the difference was less than $50. I wasn't sure how this thing was going to work but man am I impressed. It comes with one thin cutoff wheel and it does DAMAGE. I used it to cut some 1.25" x 1/8" thick angle steel to length. It went thru it nearly as fast as my 7" 13 amp grinder. You can feel the torque! The safty sroud is fully adjustable for the best angle with a lever tensioner. The stablizer handle can be mounted on either the right or left side. There's not much more to say about it. Great for those little jobs and in tight spaces.
On to the "what's with this?" category. The impact driver I'm not as impressed with but then I wasn't expecting much or even really to use it. I thought I read somewhere it puts out 400 in-lbs of torque. I'm not even sure it this converts but assuming there's not some strange law of physics I'm unaware of that's something like 33-ft-lbs? Okay... But I suppose if your lazy or you have TON of little bolts to take off that are rusted on, then maybe...
Update 4-28-2011: I recently installed a full glass storm door on my parent's house. I used the drill to pre-drill the three dozen or so holes in the project. I finally figured out that the impact driver has a locking collet and is actaully a "impacting" screw gun. And surprisingly it works really well. It made short work of this project and I had NO...NOT ONE issue with rounding my screw heads. All-in-all VERY impressed!
The light is...well a light. Though I can say it's strong and bright! Honestly, I would prefer LED just because I hate wasting my battery power on these little portable space heaters. Seriously, if your cold stand in front of this thing for a minute, it'll warm you up. That said if power's no where to be found, this will light up your little corner of the universe.
It comes also with a nylon bag that once closed is just about busting with your new toys. It's not really heavy duty nylon but at the same time it should be fine. It also comes with a few accessories. As I mensioned before a single 4" cutoff wheel for your grinder. It also comes with one 16 tooth carbide blade for your circular saw and a tool to install it.
All in all, the price is amazing and so is this set. If you casual hobbist or a professional contractor you should be equaly impressed. These are battery tools and as such aren't going to be as strong or reliable as your bigger corded models. But trust me, if for no other reason than sake of ease, these will be the ones I grab first.

I come from a Makita family and had always planned on getting a Makita tool set. While I was at Home Depot these power tools were on sale, and my wife surprised me with them. It has been over 2 years and I am so glad she did. I love (LOVE) my Dewalt power tool set. I use the drill most frequently (of course) but I can't even count how many times the grinder has been the perfect tool for whatever job I have been working on. I try and take care of my stuff, but I have dropped my tools several times and they still work great. This has been such a great purchase and I absolutely recommend them to anyone.

This is my first purchase of a cordless circular saw. Because of that I can't say how this one matches up to other brands. The pros: medium sized therefore lighter weight than corded saws, lots of power - no problem cutting throught 2x4's or 1 inch oak, cordless - no connecting extension cords, it has a push button blade lock for easy blade replacement, safety trigger release - for those with kids, batteries seem to last about as long as my cordless Hatchet Sawzall (probably could crosscut about 50 -75 2x4's, and it will run on Milwaukee's 18 volt Regular or Lithium Ion batteries. The cons: blades (6.5 inch) can be take a little time to locate at some of the commericial big box do-it-yourself places (I know the big orange stores sell them) and it has a left sided blade - not a really big deal since it works very well right handed , it just takes a couple of practice cuts to know where the blade is cutting like all saws.

At the sub $50 bargain price I got this for it is a great deal and a very handy saw. Do not expect it to replace a monster corded worm drive saw, but for smaller jobs where setting up extension cords would be a pain in the neck this is just the ticket. By all means use a thin kerf blade like comes with the saw when you get a replacement blade.
Milwaukee makes several different 18 volt Li-Ion battery packs. This works with the full sized V18 packs, but not their small compact cousins nor with the new M18 system Milwaukee has recently brought out. I suspect that the reason many V18 compatible tools are available at a deep discount is that Milwaukee is changing its battery pack form factor.
Personally I'm thrilled to have this one at a bargain price.

Great battery! I bought this specifically for my job site radio (2790-20), but recently purchased a cordless sawzall and will be using it for the sawzall as well. Additionally, I have two XC batteries that came with my hammer drill (2602-22) and impact driver (2650-22). These batteries last a loooooong time for almost all applications; it seems like each battery will last for several hours doing even mid-level work. So far, the only time that the battery completely drained on me while I was working was when I used my drill to mix concrete (using an attached paddle for mixing concrete in a bucket).
As far as the weight, it's really not that bad and you get used to it quickly. I have used the 18V compact li-on batteries, which are great, but half the amperage; this battery is 2.8 amps and the compact is 1.4. Additionally, if you buy this retail at Home Depot, you're paying $120 + tax versus the $75 here. Totally worth it.
Now comes my critique. I absolutely loooooove Milwaukee, but they really should have taken a lesson from DeWalt: Their Ni-Cad and Li-On batteries are not "backwards compatible" with each other, that is, you HAVE TO USE the respective battery with its respective tool. Even worst, certain tools REQUIRE the XC M18 battery and cannot be powered by the compact M18 (for example, the cordless sawzall [2620-20]). To me, Milwaukee should have made every battery--from Ni-Cad to Li-On, and regardless of XC/compact or voltage--compatible with every tool and charger, but they didn't . . . so yeah. The good thing about purchasing this battery from the get-go is that it can be used on all of Milwaukee's M18 series tool line, whereas the compact M18 cannot.
As for charging, it's pretty reasonable. If it only has one bar left on the fuel gauge, I find that it takes anywhere from 30 to 50 minutes to charge. I called Milwaukee about leaving the battery charging overnight, and they said that it's not an issue with these batteries--a sigh of relief for those of us used to older batteries with "battery memory."
I would highly recommend this battery, but KNOW if the tool you intend to use it on is compatible with it. Again, Milwaukee's Ni-Cad tools are NOT compatible with their Li-On batteries, and vice versa. Know your line of Milwaukee cordless tools before purchasing.

$30 cheaper then home depot works great with my M18 impact would highly recommend. like the battery life feature. Havent had to charge it yet hold a charge for a long time.

First off, if you put this side to side with a corded super Sawzall, the Sawzall will win hands down. For what it is, the Makita is a truly amazing product.
Some quick points / comments:
Never had any problems with changing the blades and I regularly get mine full of mud using it with a long blade to cut out tree roots.
The Batteries last about 12 minutes if your using it really hard, and they get very hot and take 30-40 minutes before they are charged again, due to the additional time required to cool them. If your going to really use this saw hard on a regular basis, buy more batteries.
I used this saw with a 12" blade in it to cut down a 47 year old spruce tree when my chain saw wasn't available. It was over 15" thick. Took the saw a while, but it did it.
I've cut metal, plaster, metal lath, 4x4's, lots of conduit, lots of tree trimming / pruning, etc. It's really worked well on all of it.
One suggestion, you get what you pay for in terms of blades. I think the Bosch blades are some of the very best. Lenox blades are also very good, but tend to warp from the heat during heavy use more than the bosch blades do. The Milwaukee blades are pretty decent.
It likely won't replace your super sawzall for really heavy demo work, but for everything else, I think it is just an amazing tool.

I read the reviews before purchasing the Makita BJR 182 but no one mentioned the differences between this one and the Makita BJR 181 at twice the price. Once I got my new saw I found out what the differences were. The 182 doesn't have the rafter hook that the 181 has (no big deal for me - I've never used it anyway) and it also doesn't have the LED lights that ALL the other Makita 18V Lithium Ion LXT tools that I own have. That was a big disappointment - I love how the LED lights allow you to work in dark areas without the need for a worklight.

OK, if you are a serious user, then you shouldn't be looking at Black and Decker to begin with. But, if you are like most of us weekend warriors, then this saw fits the bill nicely. There are a lot of nice features like a front and rear handle. You can raise the blade guard during use without putting you fingers as near the blade as the older models, as well as many new ones. I still have all 10 fingers. It is quick and easy to change depth and angles. Once use to the laser guide, you'll always want one. It made a long project this summer much for enjoyable after bucking my older, better saw for 30 years. Under heavier use, I gave it some breathers, as it isn't an upper end saw, but for the money and features, it is hard to beat.

the 1030l replaced the 1040 model.
the obvious differences are a drop from 14 amps to 13 amps, if this was it then no problem..... unfortunately it's not
the 1030l is a much lesser product that they have obviously reduced the cost of build (even though retailed at the same price).
The first thing is they dont include the ripguard on the 1030l - FFS it's a 10c piece of metal, why would they not include this.
The second thing is that the 1030l doesn't include the spin lock button - basically this prevents the blade from spinning when you change the blade (among other things).
Anyway, like i said it's still priced about right but dissapointing they removed basic things like this.

I bought this saw to repair water damage on a plaster ceiling in the kitchen. A regular circular
saw is too bulky and heavy and would leave a big mess (I have used one before repairing a plaster wall).
I used a tile cutting blade and the saw performed perfectly! It had plenty of power to cut through the
plaster and wire mesh embedded in the plaster.
The best feature in my opinion was the adapter that connects to a shop vac and that made for a minimal mess.
I chose this particular saw over it's competitors as they did not have this feature.
The laser took some getting used to since you can't see the blade cutting path but it cut straight
lines none the less with practice.
With it's compact size, I had no problem cutting in tight places above the cabinets.
It is a great product for the money spent.

This is a rugged tool that has stamina, decent accuracy, is easy to use, relatively quiet, and has terrific bells and whistles. No powertool is perfect, of course, so here's the nitty-gritty...
I've been cutting primarily 4'x8' panels of 3/8" plywood -- low grade, riddled with knots -- and the saw performed like a champ. The cut line was not much wider than my pencil line (if at all), and the edges were pretty clean.
My biggest issue is with the spring-loaded platform that drops into place when the saw is not in use. To cut anything, you have to trip a latch and press down on the saw, which forces the platform upward and exposes the blade. As a safety feature, this is actually not bad. However, it does mean that you can't see where the blade is hitting the wood (there are markings to go by -- see below). And there's a bigger problem in that you have to press down on the edge of your workpiece with the front edge of the spring-loaded platform when you initiate a cut -- a procedure I found fairly awkward. You can work around this if you initiate every cut as a plunge cut, but the platform still complicates things, at least a little.
Despite these negatives, there are advantages. The platform makes plunge cutting very straightforward. Though you can't see the blade, there's a V notch at the front for aiming your pencil line (reasonably, though not perfectly, accurate), and rulers along either side of the platform indicating where the front and back of the blade will hit according to the depth of cut you've selected. Also, the platform gives you two smooth, straight edges on either side of the blade for running against your own jury-rigged edge guides. And when the saw is not in use, it stands nicely upright on the platform.
As for the bells and whistles, there are two embedded lights -- a laser and an LED. The laser is accurate and very useful, but the switch is problematic. It's a three way deal -- LED-OFF-LASER -- and at least on my unit, the thing was way too loosey-goosey. As for the LED, it's a rather modest spotlight that falls just ahead of the V notch. Enough to illuminate your pencil line, not enough to illuminate the entire work area.
The vacuum attachment worked a charm, even using an old Eureka upright. Also included is an edge guide that was great for shorter trims, as well as a couple of plastic pieces for scratch-proofing the bottom of the platform. The manual, by the way, is excellent. The impact-resistant case is pretty decent, too.
Bottom line: if you absolutely have to see where the blade is touching the wood, or you need to bevel your edges (maybe possible with this saw, but I don't see how), or you require cuts deeper than 7/8" (I never went much beyond 3/8" and can't vouch for the deeper settings), this may not be the tool for you. For my own applications, I found that it lived up to my expectations and even exceeded them, and I don't hesitate giving it a five star rating.

Simply put: Good tools for a cheap price. You want twice the quality, twice the run time? You would pay more than twice this price to get it, period. Tip: Charge ALL cordless tool batteries for an extended period for their first charge. I recommend overnight. Why? If your batteries do not require this, it definitely will not hurt them. If your batteries (like the ones included in this kit) require this extended charge, then you could ruin them or seriously reduce battery capacity by NOT charging them for an extended time period before the first use. Anybody complaining about [any] battery life right out of the package is either A. Not reading the instructions for their battery packs B. Not using their tools ;/or batteries properly C. Not being fully honest or D. Any combination of the previous 3 choices. If you are a home user and your tools will rarely leave your home, this kit is a good value. The last reason to recommend this tool kit is because The Home Depot sells it and The Home Depot owns a majority share in the company TTI, who makes Ryobi. If you have a problem with a Ryobi tool, take it back to The Home Depot and exchange it.

Alright, so going in you should already know that these aren't the greatest or highest quality. I personally only use them at home and wouldn't use them as a professional. As a pro, I use Milwaukee, Bosch, and some dewalt. These tools are just great for what I use them for. They will certainly get the job done for basic around-the-house things. I do however believe these to certainly be better than Black ; Decker, and I also feel that they are better than Porter-Cable.
Batteries are alright, but are cheap to replace. These tools will last you a long time for around the house use. I have the Drill, circ saw, recip saw, flashlight, and will be getting the impact driver. The good thing about ryobi is that their tools work with either the NiCad battery or the Li Ion battery. If you get these without astronomical expectations, then you will be satisfied.
